What's In a Name? :  The Power of Identity in Christ

NAME

Names carry incredible power. They shape how we see ourselves and how others perceive us. In the Gospel of Luke, we find a profound encounter where Jesus asks a simple yet transformative question: "What is your name?" This question reveals something crucial about the spiritual battle for our identity and God's desire to set us free from the labels that bind us.

The Man Among the Tombs: A Life Transformed

In Luke 8, we encounter a man living in the most desperate circumstances imaginable. He was naked, feared by everyone, dwelling among the dead in a graveyard, and had completely lost control of himself. Filled with multiple demons, he represented someone in the darkest possible place.

Yet when Jesus arrived, everything changed. This man, who wasn't even Jewish, became the first evangelist to the Gentiles after his encounter with Christ. From the depths of despair to becoming a messenger of hope - this transformation shows us the incredible power of Jesus to change our identity completely.

Why Did Jesus Ask for the Demon's Name?

When Jesus commanded the demons to leave, they initially didn't obey. Why? Because Jesus needed to know exactly who He was addressing. The response came back: "Legion" - indicating a multitude of demons. Once Jesus had the name, He could command them all to leave with complete authority.

Names Have Spiritual Authority

This encounter demonstrates that names carry spiritual power and authority. When we know exactly what we're dealing with - whether it's a spiritual force, a lie we believe about ourselves, or a label that's been placed on us - we can address it directly and command it to leave in Jesus' name.

How Names Shape Our Lives

Throughout our lives, we accumulate various names and labels. Some build us up, while others tear us down. Consider how many different names you carry:

  • Family names (daughter, son, mother, father)
  • Professional titles (teacher, manager, student)
  • Nicknames from childhood
  • Labels others have given us
  • Names we call ourselves

The Destructive Power of Negative Labels

Many people carry names that limit them - labels like "clumsy," "stupid," "failure," "disappointment," or worse. These names often come from childhood experiences or repeated messages from others. They become internal voices that tell us what we can't do or who we can't become.

When we believe these negative labels, they control our behaviour. We avoid opportunities, shy away from challenges, and limit ourselves based on lies we've accepted as truth about our identity.

What Does Jesus Call You?

Jesus takes a radically different approach to naming people. He doesn't focus on who they are in their current state - He calls them by who they will become.

Simon Becomes Peter

Simon's name meant "listener," and he was good at listening to Jesus. But when Simon declared Jesus to be the Son of God, Jesus gave him a new name: Peter, meaning "rock." Jesus saw beyond Simon's current impulsiveness and instability to who he would become - the foundational leader of the early church.

Abraham and Sarah's New Identity

God changed Abram's name to Abraham (father of multitudes) and Sarai's name to Sarah (mother of nations) before they ever had children. At 80 years old and childless, they needed to hear their new identity daily to build their faith for what God promised to do.

Breaking Free from Limiting Labels

Jesus warned strongly against calling others fools because labelling someone traps them in a lie. When we accept negative names about ourselves, we become imprisoned by those limitations.

The Voice in Your Head

We all have an internal voice that speaks to us, especially when we make mistakes. Often this voice repeats names or labels given to us in childhood or through repeated experiences. These internal messages can prevent us from stepping into our full potential in Christ.

God Wants to Rename You

Just as Jesus asked "What is your name?" to the demons before casting them out, He wants to identify the limiting labels in our lives so He can remove them. God desires to:

  • Remove names that trap and limit us
  • Forgive the actions that gave us negative labels
  • Heal the wounds from hurtful names others have spoken over us
  • Give us new names that reflect our true identity in Him

Your True Identity in Christ

God has names for you that only He knows. He calls you:

  • Beloved
  • Precious one
  • My child
  • Chosen
  • Set apart
  • Gifted
  • Called

These aren't just nice words - they're your true identity. When you believe what God says about you rather than what others have said or what you tell yourself, you'll begin to live from that truth.

Life Application

This week, pay attention to the voice in your head when things go wrong. What names or labels automatically surface? Ask God to reveal any limiting names you've been carrying and surrender them to Him. Then ask Him what He calls you - what is your true name in His eyes?

Consider these questions:

  • What negative labels have I accepted about myself that aren't from God?
  • How have these limiting names affected my choices and behaviour?
  • What does God want to call me instead of these old labels?
  • How would my life change if I truly believed God's names for me rather than the world's labels?

The same Jesus who set the demon-possessed man free wants to set you free from every limiting label and give you a new name that reflects who you truly are in Him. Your past doesn't define you - God's love and purpose for your life does.

Our Sunday Morning Service

Our Sunday Morning Service begins at 10am with a warm welcome from one of our team members. Then follows a time of sung worship, led by our band as well as some interactive items related to the biblical theme being explored. Sometimes a person might pray out loud or read a small passage from the bible. Sometimes people share things that they believe God is saying to the whole church family. This might seem strange the first time you hear it but it’s all part of our connecting with God. We then share news and notices, usually about what’s going on in the life of the church. One of our leaders will then give a talk (sermon) that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. After the talk, we have a time of ministry where people can pray for one another, as well as opportunity to chat and get to know each other better with a hot drink and biscuit (we do not charge for refreshments). We then gather together again for about 10 minutes for a final bit of sharing or encouraging each other in our faith and finish with a final song.

What About My Kids?

On Sundays provision is made for children at King's Kids. Children stay with adults for the first part of the Celebration and are encouraged to join in with the songs and interactive parts. Just before the Bible teaching, the children (4-11 years) will be invited to go to an adjoining room for 'King's Kids' that is run by a dedicated and fully DBS checked team of volunteers where they will receive Bible teaching relevant to their age, do some fun games and crafts and sing some songs. They return to their parents and to the Main Hall shortly after the Bible teaching during the Ministry and Refreshments time.

If you would like to accompany your child to King's Kids for the first few times, that is fine. Also, if you do not wish your child to go to King's Kids and to stay with you in the Main Hall, that is also fine.

Is There Anything For Teenagers?

We run a Youth Group called King's Youth. This happens during our Sunday morning service once a month and is for Children who are going to Senior School (aged 11-14). This takes place during the sermon and is a place where the teenagers can have a discussion about a topic from the bible. We find those 15+ are more comfortable remaining in the main meeting with the adults.

We have resources on the tables that include adult colouring in, puzzles and fidget toys for anyone who may find them useful during the meeting (even adults!).
