Designs For Hope

About HOPEHIV
The initial motivation for setting up my jewellery making came from a challenge I received during our trip to Spring Harvest this Easter. We were given a presentation from HOPEHIV about the work they have been doing with children and young people who have been orphaned or affected by Aids in sub-Saharan Africa. We were each given £10 to invest, to see if we could make a return of £100 to further the work. For further information on HOPEHIV and the 10/10 challenge, you can visit their website at www.hopehiv.org. I have now sent £220 to HOPEHIV, which has exceeded my initial expectations, and I would like to thank everybody who has already bought the designsforhope jewellery.

About me
I can remember when I was still at school that I wanted to be a fashion designer, but the downside of that was that I was absolutely useless with a sewing machine, so that was a short lived career option! I have always enjoyed drawing and painting, and I love looking at jewellery – what colours have been used together, what techniques have been used, and how it completes a ‘look’ which fits in with the current fashions. I started researching jewellery making options at the beginning of August 2010, and have enrolled in a wire and beads workshop to refine my skills. It has been surprisingly easy to pick up some basic techniques, and I am very pleased with the results I have achieved so far.

Going into a bead shop is like walking into an Aladdin’s cave, full of colours and piles of glittering delights. Beads come in so many shapes and materials, and all of them almost irresistible. Most of my designs have been influenced by the styles of the beads themselves - soft, glimmering pearl shades or vibrant sparkly boho chic. I sometimes design with a particular person in mind, which has led me into naming some of my jewellery ranges after close friends and family.

If you email me at designsforhope@hotmail.co.uk you can let me know what items you are interested in, and I can advise what is currently available. I can customise many of the lines, if you wish to have a longer or shorter necklace or bracelet, or with a different fastening. The cost of a necklace is £12, and the bracelets and earrings are priced at £6.50. A set of 3 items, to include one necklace and two smaller items is £20. The items can be from different ranges if you like. There are also some pendants and multi pendants at £6, charm bracelets at £8 and the lariat reversible necklace with matching bracelet at £10. I am now sending 20% of the profits to HOPEHIV. If you are buying the item as a gift, ask for a pretty organza gift bag as well – it’s just £1 extra.
The Ranges
Springtime
The colours and brightness of Spring are the inspiration for this colourful range. There are soft glass pearls mixed with wavy copper wire, pretty floral beads, the sparkle of Swarovski crystals, or a mixture of soft greens or blues. Some semi precious stones are used such as stabilised natural turquoise, or creamy soapstone.

Fused Glass Pendants
These pendants have been handmade by cutting glass, assembling the design, and then fusing three layers of glass together in a kiln to create a completely unique piece. The pendants are on cotton cord, or leather cord.

Royal Tea
With all attention on the forthcoming Royal Wedding, this is a time to celebrate all things British. Garden parties, strawberries and cream, Ascot, Wimbledon, and of course, a nice cup of tea!

Lomond
The lochs and glens of Scotland have inspired this collection of natural stones in muted shades of peat, moss, thyme and heather. Some of the necklaces also have pieces of unpolished Polish amber, as part of the natural and authentic look.

Reversible Lariat
This 2 – way necklace is a mix of new and vintage, tiny and chunky beads, and can be worn with the large chunky bead as a focal point at the front, or reversed for an elegant asymmetrical alternative. If you let me know a colour scheme, I can make one to order!

Elements
Inspired by the four elements – earth, air, water and fire, these multi pendants have a mix of beads or charms to make a stylish impression.

Charm bracelets
These deceptively simple bracelets are made with 2 colours of suede knotted together, with beads and charms added at the knots. Then a variety of charms are added along the lengths between the knots. Choose a colour scheme, and choose some charms – handbags, dragonflies, cup cakes, safety pins and flowers are among the current favourites!
